The Cathovangelical: Rick Santorum's Quest for a National Abortion Showdown
What is most interesting to me here is how Santorum may be nominally Catholic but nothing he says really establishes, to my satisfaction, that he’s anything other than an evangelical. He disagrees with the party line in Rome on most things — not just the death penalty but climate change, illegal immigrants, social programs (welfare, etc), diplomatic relations with Iran. Just by the numbers, most Republicans who identify as Catholics are better Republicans than they are Catholics. It’s just that abortion is seen as such a huge issue that anyone who comes down on the anti-choice (sorry, people who support the death penalty and oppose valuable programs for the less fortunate, I’m not calling you pro-life) feels s/he can accurately identify as Catholic. But in Santorum’s case…evangelicals hate abortion, too? So what is it exactly that makes him Catholic? Attending church? Going to confession? Taking the Eucharist? I know the answer is “the fact that he identifies as Catholic,” but. But.
This article is cockface.
do you know how many gay people I know who identify as Catholic? How many Catholics use condoms or the pill? Like 10 American’s kiss the Pope’s ass but Rick Santorum can’t be a Catholic? What the fuck is this shit?
DOES THIS PERSON LIVE IN THE UNTIED STATES OF AMERICA 2012 C.E.?
Dear nerdshares, is your post a joke? Best, Catbus
Dear Catbus, people can be whatever they want to be because yes. I get that. I’m saying it’s weird, in my estimation, for a politician to anchor his political agenda in religious piety when he is kind of ignoring most of the social teaching of that religion. I’m talking here about the sheer number of issues on which Santorum doesn’t agree w/ the stated views of the Catholic church. Catholic Democrats like the Kennedys make sense to me in a way that someone like Rick Santorum does not. Best, nerdshares
