Regina Cannot Explain It All

I'm Regina Small. I'm a writer and editor in NYC. I have a lot of opinions.

Interests include: sci-fi/fantasy, literature, summertime daydrinking, trying to be a better person, fancy manicures, philosophy, pictures for sad children, and the role of irony in the modern world. And fandom, of course.

I have another blog dedicated exclusively to science fiction/fantasy. Read it here.

Birds of Prey v3 #2

What to do, what to do? The buzz about the #5 reveal has her on my radar in a big way in one of the least interesting titles of the New 52.

I think even if you’re not into the series, it’s worth buying just for Starling.

She’s all kinds of awesome <3

From what I understand Starling is a brand new character and she is a definite hit for the New 52.  I’d buy a monthly series with just her, being awesome, hitting people and shooting things.  It’d rock.

Yeah, Starling was created for the series I believe and so far she’s been AMAZING. She’s quickly become one of my favourite characters of the new 52 and the recent developments with her in this months issue have only made me love her even more <3

And I would totally buy a Starling ongoing series. It would be so awesome :D

She is my favorite part of Birds of Prey.

I’d agree with that right now :D In just five issues I’ve fallen in love with this wonderful lady. I was actually a little nervous about whether the new Birds of Prey would be something I would like or not but I have been adoring this series and Starling has been a huge part of what made me love it. She gets so many great lines and cool moments <3

Starling is one of my favorite parts of the new 52, Duane’s doing a lovely job with her!

I tried to use her (asleep, for just two panels) in Batgirl, but it got nixed, drat!

First off they nixed her being in two panels doing nothing? Editorial be crazy

Second, Birds of Prey has been a big suprise and a very pleasant one. Everything about it seemed to be a imminent train wreck: Birds of Prey without Oracle? Without Gail Simone? Who was so uninvolved no one even told her Batgirl would be on the team when she was writing Batgirl? When Babs and Dinah seem to be really weird in the first issue preview like they didn’t even know each other? With Poison Ivy on the team and some random chicks?

The “Batgirl with purple batsuit” cover was also taken as a slap in the face by Steph fans.

But honestly, it is a serious contender for best series of the reboot and the best when it comes to series that actually rebooted the content (Unlike Batman and Batwomana nd the Green Lantern books). I loved the pre-boot Birds but I don’t mourn the changes like I do the way the Titans have been screwed with. Rather it feels like the old continuity has been reverentially put into a display case and something cool and intresting and new is been done with it.

The art is great, the action is fast and cool, Starling is a great new character, badass ladies are given the chance to be cool and badass without being exploited or wearing stupidly fanservicey costumes. Dinah is also getting great treatment, being a skilled and powerful leader of her own team of badasses and a first tier hero who should make her League debut soon. Maybe it’s a little lacking in the strong characterisation I associate with the series but that’s all it’s lacking and I think we’ll see more once the opening arc is done with.

The whole way the Bop relaunch (my return to the book, pre new 52) was handled was just awful and embarrassing. I  have no good things to say about the way that went down.

But I am DELIGHTED to see the book have a steady and gifted artist in Jesus Saiz. I was so deliriously happy when he came aboard on my run, after all the weird stuff that had gone on previously. He’s one of the best in the business. And Duane is a sweetie and a really talented guy.

I was a skeptic, I really thought the concept I was given to reboot the book with was awful, but Duane and Jesus have made it work. I wish them every success and am very glad that the Birds of Prey name still represents something otherwise missing in mainstream comics.
